ASH says health professionals back tougher tobacco and vape marketing rules

Action on Smoking and Health says more than 1,700 professionals signed a letter urging ministers not to dilute proposed tobacco and vape packaging, appearance and display rules as the consultation closed.

Action on Smoking and Health has published a new intervention in the UK consultation on tobacco and vape packaging, appearance and display, saying more than 1,700 health, education and public health professionals have signed a letter backing tighter controls.

The 2 October statement matters because it lands at the close of a live UK-wide policy process. The government consultation, run with the devolved governments, covers packaging for vaping and nicotine products, restrictions on device appearance, flavour descriptors and retail display. Proposals include limiting vape device colours and finishes, restricting promotional packaging features, and narrowing flavour descriptions to reduce child appeal.

ASH argues that ministers should resist pressure from tobacco and vape industry interests and proceed with comprehensive rules. Its release also cites polling commissioned by the charity showing public support for stronger limits on child-appealing vape packaging and flavour naming. Those figures are advocacy evidence rather than government findings, so they should be read as part of the consultation debate, not as the final policy position.

For adult smokers and adult vapers, the central point is balance. UK public health guidance still distinguishes vaping from smoking: nicotine vaping is described by the NHS as less harmful than smoking, while not risk-free and not appropriate for children or non-smokers. The consultation is therefore aimed at reducing appeal and visibility to young people while keeping legitimate routes open for adults who already smoke.

No new restrictions have been made by this ASH letter itself. The next material step is for the UK and devolved governments to assess consultation responses and decide what regulations to bring forward under the Tobacco and Vapes Act framework.
